Somewhere on the border between Arizona and Mexico, Old Firehand and his son Harry are out hunting when they are ambushed by the Maricopas and forced to continue their journey on foot to the small village of Dos Palmas. A man named Leflor also lives here, who runs a mercury mine on the land leased from the Maricopas. Leflor has promised Chief Peteh over 300 rifles in return for the lease, but he is unable to keep this promise. In desperation, Leflor and Chief Peteh form an alliance and ambush a trek of settlers, abducting the innocent settlers into the mercury mine. Among those kidnapped is Harry, Old Firehand's son. With Winnetou's help, Old Firehand manages to win over the Maricopas. Together they fight a dramatic battle in which they finally capture the bandits. But Leflor, who has a master key, escapes unnoticed. He plans to blow up the entire mine with dynamite. In a dramatic battle against time, Winnetou and Old Firehand manage to free the settlers and bring down the mine. Leflor's fate and that of his men is sealed.
